Global apparel retailer Uniqlo has demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by stepping up efforts through its Re.Uniqlo program.

In conjunction with World Refugees Day, Uniqlo has donated 21,200 pieces of clothing to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency to provide support and assistance to refugees in Malaysia, contributing to their well-being and preserving their dignity.

The Re.Uniqlo program is an initiative aimed at maximizing the use of clothing and reducing waste. As part of this initiative, Uniqlo collects used garments from its customers and ensures they are properly recycled or donated to those in need.

The donation of 21,200 pieces of clothing to UNHCR is a result of the active participation and support of Uniqlo customers who embrace sustainable practices and social responsibility.

The donated clothing was distributed to refugees visiting the UNHCR office during a two-day event held at UNHCR. The event aimed to provide clothing assistance to refugees in Malaysia helping to improve their quality of life.

Through this initiative, Uniqlo aspires to make a positive impact and foster a sense of community among the refugee community in Malaysia.

"We are proud to intensify our efforts in supporting refugees through our collaboration with UNHCR.

"The Re.Uniqlo program allows us to extend the lifespan of used clothing and create positive change within the communities we serve.

"Through this initiative, we hope to alleviate the burden on refugees while providing a sense of normalcy in their lives,” said Evelyn Tan, Sustainability Director of Uniqlo Malaysia.

“We understand that refugee mothers and fathers face immense challenges in meeting their family’s basics needs. Often, they work tirelessly to cover rent and put food on the table, leaving very little for anything else.

"Receiving the gift of good quality clothes will go a long way to making a difference in their lives,” said Yante Ismail, UNHCR Associate Communications Officer.

“Clothes not only mean a protective layer, but also restores a sense of dignity for people who have lost everything.

"UNHCR deeply appreciates Uniqlo’s longstanding commitment to improving the lives of refugees around the world, including in Malaysia,” added Yante.

This project with UNHCR is a testament to Uniqlo’s efforts to shed light on the struggles faced by refugees and forcibly displaced groups.

Uniqlo remains dedicated to creating a better society through its various initiatives, including sustainable practices and community support. - KitaReporters/Media Release
